From video to pixel animation, on your device
Drop in an MP4, WebM or MOV file and PixiMelon extracts its frames and pixelates each one with the same engine as the image converter — resolution, color count, palette, dithering and transparency included. Everything runs locally in your browser: the video is never uploaded anywhere.
Extraction follows the FPS you choose (1–60, 24 by default), capped at 480 frames so browsers stay responsive. A 20-second clip at 60 FPS would need over a thousand frames, so the tool says so openly and keeps the first 480.
Extraction settings that matter
- FPS — frames extracted per second of video. Changing it re-reads the video; 12 FPS reads as choppy retro, 24–30 as smooth motion.
- Pixel resolution — presets from 32 to 256 px. Small values read as classic sprite animation.
- Colors and Consistent Palette — one global palette is computed across all frames, so colors never flicker between frames. Turn it off only if you want each frame quantized on its own.
- Dithering and Sharp pixels — same tradeoff as still images: texture for gradients, hard flat fills for cartoon footage. See the dithering guide.
Timeline, compare view and playback
Every extracted frame lands on a numbered filmstrip with a live counter. The compare view shows the original frame next to its pixel version with shared zoom and pan, and Play previews the animation at your extraction FPS with pause and frame-by-frame stepping.
Exports: GIF, video and sprite sheet
- GIF — loops forever with per-frame palettes for exact colors. GIF timing is discrete, so the file plays at the closest supported speed and tells you when that differs from your FPS.
- MP4 / WebM video — recorded locally from the pixel canvas, upscaled so small art stays crisp. Browsers that cannot mux MP4 save WebM instead and say so.
- Sprite sheet — all frames side by side in one PNG, ready for game engines (see sprite sheets explained).
- Frame PNG — the current frame exactly like maker art.
Finish in the animator
Press Edit Animation and all frames move into the animator on one shared layer — project name included — where you can reorder, clean pixels by hand with onion skin, and export GIF or sprite sheet. The intended pipeline is video → pixel animation → hand finish → export.
Frequently asked questions
Which video formats can I convert?
MP4, WebM and MOV files load directly from your device. Live streams are not supported — everything is read from a local file.
How many frames can a video become?
Duration times FPS, capped at 480 frames for browser memory. The tool reports the exact count and warns openly when a long clip gets truncated.
Why does my GIF play at a different FPS?
GIF frame timing comes in fixed steps, so the file uses the closest timing it supports. The page tells you the effective playback speed before you export.
Will I get MP4 or WebM?
MP4 wherever the browser can mux it (Safari, modern Chrome); otherwise WebM with an on-screen notice. Both are recorded locally from the pixel canvas.
Can I edit individual frames by hand?
Yes — send the result to the animator with one click and every frame becomes editable with layers, onion skin and full undo.
Why does my converted video look choppy?
The extraction FPS sets the smoothness: 12 FPS reads as retro chop, 24–30 as fluid motion. Fast action needs the higher end.
Can I convert just part of a video?
There is no trimming inside the tool — cut the clip to the moment you want first, then convert that file.
Does the sound survive conversion?
No. The output is a silent animation: GIF, silent video or sprite sheet — motion only, never audio.
